The heart of the Kompogas® plant is the digester. This is the vessel where organic waste is converted into renewable biogas and first-class, all-natural fertilizer. Under anaerobic conditions (i.e. without any oxygen) the organic material is completely decomposed in a two-week process. The result is precious biogas with compost and liquid fertilizer as useful by-products.
The biogas is used as renewable fuel for generating green energy in the form of electricity, which is fed into the San Luis Obispo region’s electrical grid. The plant produces enough energy to power around 600 homes.
